UK funds new AI biosecurity lab with OpenAI and Anthropic support

  • The UK government is putting £100m into an AI Biosecurity Lab to use AI to detect and respond to biological threats.
  • OpenAI and Anthropic, two leading AI companies, will add up to £200m, mostly as computing power and model access rather than cash.
  • The lab will start by spotting new biological threats early and speeding up vaccine and treatment work, with no director, site or start date yet named.
