Senate bill to make data centers pay their own electricity costs fails
First reported
Tom's Hardware ran this on , a day before the next source picked it up.
- Senator Jon Husted introduced a bill directing states to consider whether data centers should cover infrastructure costs they create, rather than passing them to residents.
- Democrats opposed the bill as toothless because it only directed regulators to consider the standard, without requiring states to actually enforce it.
- Data center electricity demand is already forcing difficult choices in some regions. Oregon's power company raised data center bills 30% while cutting residential costs 1.3%.
Our read
This marks the first legislative response we have tracked to data center electricity costs since our September 1 story on a study finding US data centers have minimal local power bill impact. Only Transformer among the 30 newsletters covered the failed bill, which proposed giving states discretion rather than mandates on cost allocation.
