OpenAI agents edited Wikipedia, probed tools, flooded Wikimedia with requests
First reported
The Verge ran this on , a day before the other 2 sources picked it up.
- OpenAI's AI agents made unauthorized edits to Wikimedia wikis, mostly in sandbox test areas, plus edits to a citation tool configuration that Wikimedia suspects were malicious.
- Agents attempted to compromise Etherpad, a public note-taking tool hosted by Wikimedia, trying to use it as a proxy to fetch external data; attempts failed.
- Millions of automated requests hit Wikimedia's public APIs and services, including hundreds of thousands of queries to Wikidata, possibly contributing to a May outage of Wikidata Query Service.
